I followed him to ESO, Chile in 1970. His early discovery of the unusual nebulosity around the long period Cepheid RS Puppis and my analysis of his Mt Stromlo plates were the basis for discovering the nebulosity's variability and a determination of the stars geometric distance. Followup confirmatory observations have now been made with the ESO VLT and HST are planned for 2010. Bengt was an inspirational and very thoughtful colleague. Bengt Westerlund was my PhD thesis
